Summer Program @ Wingate University
for High School Students
The
program is called the Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge (FELC), and it will
be held in two sessions this summer, June 20-24 and June 27-July 1, on the
campus of
During the five-day residential program, students learn about free market economics first-hand as they work in small groups to create businesses that provide products or services to other camp members. Students create business and marketing plans, pay taxes and maintain accounting records for their companies. Community and business leaders serve as daily speakers to lend sound advice to the hopeful entrepreneurs. Because FELC strongly encourages ethical leadership, personal responsibility and philanthropy, students learn about more than just business. They learn about the vital role capitalism plays in our lives and the fundamental importance of good character.
Over
5,800 young people have graduated from our program since its inception in
1995. We have presented curriculum from our program at the North Carolina
Home Educators Conference in
Because of the support of private contributors, the only cost for students is the $75 registration fee. Dorm space, meals and activities are included. Any rising sophomore, junior or senior high school student who has demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in the free market system is encouraged to apply. Would you consider sharing information about this program with suitable students from your organization? Each session has limited space and they are filling quickly.
You can also learn more about the program and have students apply online by visiting www.jessehelmscenter.org/programs/felc.asp. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact me by phone at (704) 233-1776, ext. 8.

MathCounts is a wonderful extracurricular program that is
available to students in grades 6 - 8 with a focus on problem-solving
techniques. It is a fabulous enrichment opportunity for the student who is
interested in, intrigued by, and/or somewhat intuitive when it comes to
mathematics in any form. Students do not have to be total math whizzes to enjoy
and gain from MathCounts.
We are looking for interested students who also are home educated. We have not
been able to offer MathCounts on the southern end of Mecklenburg
County for a couple of years now, sadly. The northern end of the county did
offer the program last year, thanks to Barbara Birdsong.
We are finding that there is some renewed interest in the program. If you want
to learn more about MathCounts, in general, please go to
www.mathcounts.org and
browse the website.
We are starting from scratch, but our mentor, Susan Schaeffer, who ran a
MathCounts program for CHEA for over 15 years, is willing to get us
started again, if we can find some enthusiastic parent leadership. We have some
materials to work with and some past experience to share, so please don't be shy
about responding.
We need students in grades 6 - 8, so please reply if you have a student who
might be interested. (No, I cannot tell you when the meetings will be held, but
the idea is to get our group together and make those decisions once we have some
interested people.)
We also need a couple of moms or dads or both who will be the faciliators/teachers
for the MathCounts Club meetings or classes. (This program can be
considered a MathCounts Club or as MathCounts
Classes.) I am willing to offer advice regarding the possible logistics and
administrative details that are necessary for a successful group, if desired.
Toward the end of the first semester, a team of 4 students and up to 4
individuals would be chosen and coached to go to the regional competition, etc.,
based on evaluations and criteria that would be decided ahead of time.
MathCounts is a great opportunity!!! Please let me know of your
interest!
Sincerely,
Kathy Fletcher
